| I’ve gone by many names over the years: deathbypanda, furiousengel, floorpie, poony(misspoontang) all stemming from my love affair with FPS games, more specifically rtcw and wolfinstein: enemy territory. The problem with these names is that they don’t really fit in with the roller derby theme. So to carry through some of my gaming persona I chose a ww2 inspired name of Blitzkrieg Deluxe.
Right now I’m a 20-something year old web designer slash developer slash support monkey, just chewing my way through life and trying to have as much fun as possible along the way. Fun for me consists of either chilling out with friends, dancing (badly) at the various goth clubs around Melbourne, watching movies, online gaming, long drives with loud music and singing (also badly), camping, sleep and most recently learning to skate ^_^
Now before this gets dangerously close to looking like an online dating profile i’ll fill you in on the motivation for this blog.
Having not had a personal project in at least 4 or 5 years I thought it was time to get out and do something, something a little different, something with style, something that’s fun, something where i can meet like-minded people.
Now having found that something to aspire to I felt it was only fitting to keep a journal of my experiences if for no ones benefit other than my own. This may end very badly, it may end in tantrums, tears and/or trauma but at least I will have something documented for posterity.
Why Roller Derby
Why the hell not I say !
In my mind there’s no cooler sport to watch. lovely ladies skating around in awesome outfits and knocking the shit out of each other. whats not to love?
I’ve never found a sport that I’ve really fit into. in school I tried gymnastics, netball and basketball.. all the usual suspects and the one sport I enjoyed but hardly ever got to play was footy. just being able to have an excuse to be a little bit rougher than usual.
I also loved skating when i was younger. I was always fascinated with watching skateboarders and wishing I had the coordination to just roll around on wheels all day.
While skateboarding has never been a possibility i could always manage to get around in quad skates or roller blades which filled me with a little confidence when i started researching the most interesting sport in a long time, roller derby.
If roller derby was still the game that was played in the 70’s I’m not sure i would be so keen. back when it started it was more of a WWE type sport, pure exhibitionism but now it’s played competitively and I loves myself a bit of healthy competition.
There’s not much I don’t like about the sport. I can take beating I reckon and I’m not scared of broken bones. there are so many pluses to derby. improved physical fitness is a big plus for me but one of the things I look forward to the most is being part of a tribe. It’s been along time since I’ve been involved in something with such a strong sense of camaraderie and I really look forward to being part of a roller derby family.
